NYCDDC, City Hall Steps Reconstruction:

McKissack provided construction management services for the $4.6M reconstruction of the existing steps and supporting structure at the front entrance of City Hall in order to provide a safe environment that is free of tripping hazards and prevents water from leaking into the basement.
Built in 1802, City Hall is one of the architectural treasures of New York City. Due to over two centuries of wear and deterioration, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission found that replacement of the existing entry steps was warranted. The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the new design with instructions to preserve the existing substructure and brick vault supporting the steps.
The project included:
- Removal of the existing ADA lift and bridge, including but not limited to associated supports and electrical supply
- Removal of existing limestone steps and brick supporting structure
- Shoring and protection, as necessary, of the existing building foundation
- Installation of replacement pavers at top and bottom landings adjacent to reconstructed steps as required to perform the work
- Installation of reinforced concrete stepped slab and footing
- Installation of solid granite steps with associated metal anchors
- Installation of waterproof membrane between concrete support and granite steps
- Installation of stair railings, new lift and ramp as required for ADA accessibility
